Why should our girls be locked in a cycle of disadvantage?
Hackney and Haringey have one of the highest rates of poverty in England. Over 40% of residents are from minority ethnic groups whose socio-economic status and low income levels leave them disadvantaged and with a lower quality of life. As a result of their backgrounds, young people are inhibited from accessing mainstream education and extracurricular activities, keeping them locked in a cycle of disadvantage.
Instead of looking forward to a future of
- Growth
- Independence
- Professional success
like their mainstream peers can, they remain stuck with a lack of opportunities.
Our daughters deserve more.
Since 2000, Get Set Girls works with 16-19 year olds in this demographic, bridging the gap in local youth provisions. We lift them past their social and cultural limits and give them better prospects for the future.
In our safe, sensitive environment, they feel comfortable tapping into their inner selves and seizing the opportunity for this chance at change.
And change they do.

How we’re changing lives
To achieve long-term stability, young women need more than a skill-set and a job. They need education, empowerment and emotional wellbeing.
We therefore work with a holistic approach offering programmes that will ensure lasting impact.
Further education
Our beginner and advanced college courses present our minimally-qualified users with new academic and career opportunities, at no cost, opening doors to a future that would otherwise be out of reach.
Personal development workshops
Given their backgrounds, our users’ often lack basic life skills. Our workshops teach them how to set clear, practical goals, to improve focus and motivation and to develop and maintain good relationships, leading to richer, more productive lives.
Vocational courses
By learning creative trades in the arts, our users harness hidden talents while developing practical, transferable skills that increase their employability in rewarding and lucrative fields, breaking the cycle of poverty and putting them on the road to independence.
Health and wellbeing
Adolescence to adulthood is never a smooth transition, all the more so for our socially-isolated users. Under the care of our on-site psychotherapist, users are educated and empowered in a trusted community space, enhancing their mental health and optimism for the future.
Career support
Our comprehensive into-work programme enables users to clarify their career goals and understand their options. Users learn how to build their confidence and acquire the skills they will need to help them progress to sustainable employment.
Opportunities
With social exclusion a key barrier to mainstream opportunities, our wide range of culturally-appropriate experiences cultivate confidence, promote social development and encourage interest in community involvement, filling users with self-worth and improving their overall quality of life.
